Sobriety While Traveling: How I Survived My First Sober Vacation

In June 2023, I embarked on my first alcohol-free vacation to an all-inclusive resort. As someone who was early in their sobriety journey, I initially felt anxious about traveling without alcohol.

However, I soon discovered that not only was it doable, but it was actually a better experience without alcohol. In this blog post, I want to share my insights and highlight the advantages of embracing sobriety while traveling.

Discovering the Natural Highs

Upon arriving at the resort, I quickly realized that I could experience the natural highs of a vacation without the need for alcohol. In the past, my first instinct was always to head to the bar and start drinking.

However, this time, I woke up each morning feeling refreshed and without the dreadful hangovers. I relished the freedom of not feeling the compulsion to drink and could enjoy my days without any mental fog.

Physical Well-being

Looking back, I noticed the stark contrast in how I used to feel when I drank during vacations. When I tried to walk in town or work out, it was hard. Not only did I have several cocktails the day and night before, but I was also very dehydrated.

However, being alcohol-free allowed me to stay properly hydrated and significantly reduced stomach issues. I found myself eating better without the influence of alcohol, avoiding binge eating, and truly savoring the food without regret. I ate better without all the alcohol and didn’t binge eat, which usually happens after too many cocktails.

Contrary to the misconception that alcohol enhances the taste of food, I discovered a newfound clarity and enjoyment in each bite.

Navigating Social Situations

During the conversation, some people found out I didn’t drink, but usually, most people didn’t care. In fact, I find more and more sober people. Being sober allowed me to be fully present and attentive, which fostered more meaningful connections.

While some people might ask what you're drinking, your response can vary depending on your own journey. Personally, I take pride in proudly stating that I don't drink and often don't feel the need to provide an explanation.

However, during the early stages of sobriety, it's understandable if you prefer to keep it to yourself. I met one person who was sober who told me, “I know it’s lame,” that he drank soda water. I later told him to not say that due to it reinforcing the myth that nondrinkers are boring and that being sober is a superpower.

The Power of Shifting Mindset

For me, the most significant game-changer was shifting my mindset. Even when I had reduced my drinking in the past, I still felt a sense of missing out and experienced anxiety while traveling. It was clear that I held the belief that alcohol somehow provided me with something valuable.

If you’ve gone on several vacations with alcohol, it takes time to strengthen your sober socialization muscle. If we think we need alcohol to socialize, it might not be a conscious thought. I needed to evaluate many of my thoughts when I stopped drinking. It took me time to realize I didn’t need alcohol, and it was okay if I didn’t stay up until 2 am.

It can be helpful to look at our thoughts and flip them. If we say we need alcohol let’s say to socialize, then we’re really giving all our power away to alcohol. Would you tell a 5-year-old to drink to socialize? Would you tell a 5-year-old to drink to relax? Of course not! It’s safe to say we can change our dialogue to more accurate stories. Instead of focusing on what we think we're missing out on, let's shift our perspective and consider what we gain.

More Mocktails, Please!

I had them make me all the mocktails. The more we order them, the more resorts and other places will realize customers want them.

As I progressed in my sobriety, I cared less about what others thought of my choices. Understanding that the thoughts and opinions of others do not dictate my happiness was truly liberating.

I love helping people find their deeper purpose. When I decided to go alcohol-free, change my habits, and create new routines, I had to work a lot on my mindset. This process helped me begin the journey to help others to unlock their full potential. I believe seeking support and building connections can provide the encouragement, guidance, and empathy needed to navigate and sustain personal change.
